Joan Fulton - Hypnotherapy and Relaxation

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is the use of hypnosis to help people tackle their issues and problems. So what is hypnosis? In fact hypnosis is something that we all experience everyday quite naturally. For example, it is like the moment just before you fall asleep or the moment just after you have woken up when everything is well with the world. You are so deeply relaxed that you just can’t be bothered to move.  Or when  you are so absorbed in a book or a film or a conversation that you just don't notice what is going on around you. When you are so relaxed it is possible to bypass your rational mind and access the unconscious mind. When you are so deeply relaxed you are highly suggestible. The unconscious mind is the more powerful and is responsible for habits, long term memory, protection mechanisms and imagination. The unconscious mind can stubbornly hang on to behaviours that we just don't want or need anymore. Hypnotherapy is a powerful, safe treament.

2. How does hypnotherapy work?

Hypnotherapy works by ensuring the client is deeply relaxed. In this deeply relaxed state your mind is highly suggestible and this is when negative thoughts and patterns can be replaced with new more helpful thoughts and behaviours

3. Will I lose control?

No. You will be in complete control all the time. You will be able to simply open your eyes at any time to return to full awareness. It is not be possible to be made to do anything that you don't want to do.

4. What if I get stuck in a trance?

You can’t get stuck in a trance. You are simply in a state of deep relaxation and can open your eyes at any time. The worst that can happen is that you can fall asleep.

5. What will happen in a session?

Before the session we will have a preliminary discussion on the phone so we can establish that hypnotherapy will be able to help you with your issue. Your first session will last about 1 ½ hours. A large majority of the time will be spent taking a full case history, talking about your health, your life and your issues so that I can tailor the treatment to your needs. The remainder of the session will be hypnotherapy. If follow up sessions are required they will be approximately an hour in length. The only exception to this is a stop smoking session which will be approximately 1 ½ hours in length.

6. How many sessions will I need?

It is impossible to say without a consultation. Hypnotherapy is a solution focussed therapy which means that I aim to treat you in as few sessions as possible. Once I have spoken to you we can discuss the number of sessions. For stop smoking and weight loss there are set treatment programmes. Smoking is one 1 ½ hour session and weight loss is a programme of 5 sessions.

7. Do hypnotherapists have any code of ethics?

Yes all the main hypnotherapy bodies have Code of Ethics. I follow the ethics set out by the Institute of Clinical Hypnosis.

8. What if I can’t be hypnotised?

I believe if you can fall asleep you can be hypnotised. Experiencing hypnosis is just feeling deeply relaxed…like that moment just before you fall asleep and that moment just after you wake up.
